Newest addition to school organizations: Quill and Scroll
February 6, 2015
Though it started because seniors wanted a cord at graduation, Quill and Scroll is the newest organization on campus. It is the International Honorary Society for High School Journalists.
Quill and Scroll’s, purpose is for high school students to be more involved in the community when it comes to journalism. The club is not just for photography pursuers.
“This club is for students interested in journalism in general and even just people who love to write,” Club treasurer Caroline Witty (12) said.
The club does offer a graduation cord for seniors who have been dedicated members and have earned their way into getting a cord.
“It will better the chances of people having a successful career in journalism, English or photojournalism,” secretary Gwen Murphy (11) said.
As a brand new organization, Quill and Scroll has had to start from scratch with the election of officers. They were chosen from the members and had to explain why they truly thought they were right for the job.
“I wanted to be a leader in this new society of students who had the same common interests as me and those people I knew could help me along the way,” historian Maribeth Mills said.
The objective of this club is to offer activities that not only help writers and photographers but also plan to help younger children aspiring a career in journalism or media.
“The point of this club is to educate students about the journalistic world. Showing them what this career path has to offer,” president Jessica Blakeley said.
For anyone wanting to join, simply come to a meeting to see what it is all about.
Anyone interested in pursuing a career in journalism is welcome to join, but the club is only applicable to students who are second semester sophomores or older.
Quill and Scroll meets every second Tuesday of the month. The next meeting is Feb. 10 in Mrs. Thedford’s room, 125 at 4:30 p.m. For those who can not make an afternoon meeting, a makeup meeting is always the following morning at 8:30 a.m. in room 125.
