Leo Club kicks off year by helping less-fortunate
For the third year in a row, Mr. Shipp is the advisor for the Leo Club. The Leo Club’s objective is “…to provide the youth of the world (with) an opportunity for development and contribution, individually and collectively, as responsible members of the local, national and international community.”
“The Leo Club’s name comes from a real-life organization called the Lions Club. The Lions Club deals with adults, while the Leo Club is for students,” Shipp said.
The members of the club meet on the first and third Tuesdays of each month, after school in Mr. Shipp’s room at 4:20.
“There are about 10-15 members who show up to the meetings, but we have more members. They just have jobs making them not able to come to the meetings. They still show up to events and fundraisers we have,” Shipp said.
At the end of every school year, the members of the Leo Club vote on who they feel should be the president, vice-president, treasurer, secretary and PR representative.
“Before summer, the Leo Club voted senior Anna Wygant to be this year’s president,” Shipp said.
This weekend, the Leo Club is hosting a fundraiser at the Wylie Rodeo. We will be working the Photo Booth.
“We hope to raise around $3000 to buy equipment for students at East who are vision-impaired,” Shipp said.
Later on in the school year, the club will support elementary school carnivals, make Thanksgiving baskets for needy students who attend East and make an Angel Tree.
“I also plan to host a Diabetes Walk for the first time,” Shipp said.
