A helpful drum major
She plays the trumpet and is also a drum major. She loves Jesus and is very strong in her faith. Long story short, she’s Kaelyn Cash.
Tell me about your responsibilities as a drum major.
A drum major has a lot of responsibilities. You have to know everything about managing rehearsals, and also being able to perform really well under pressure.
Explain why you wanted to become a drum major.
I wanted to be a drum major because I want people to be able to come to me for help. Whether it’s about marching, music, or just help with typical high school things that someone might be going through.
What was the audition process like?
The audition process this year was very different from previous years, but they both took a lot of preparation. You have to be prepared for anything. Then once you finish the actual audition, you might get selected to the interview stage. There, you’ll be asked several questions from the band staff. This is where you show them who you are and why you want to be a drum major.
Do you think your role is any less fun knowing that the competitive marching season is pretty much gone due to the pandemic?
I don’t think my role is less fun. It’s just a different experience. I’m really glad we still get to do the things we’re doing while still being safe.
What’s some advice for incoming freshmen?
Enjoy it while you can. High school goes by way faster than you think. Hang on to your friendships, and build memories that will last a lifetime
