Jessie Davis: Class of 2020

Graduated in 2020, alumnus Jessie Davis is currently a junior at the Moores School of Music at the University of Houston studying music education. She aspires to work as a music teacher for elementary school kids post-graduation.

What activities were you involved in during high school?

I was mostly involved in band in high school. I was a flute and piccolo player in the marching band and wind symphony. I was also involved in the Lions club during my senior year.

What is your favorite high school memory?

My favorite high school memory was getting to travel with the Wind Symphony to Seattle for the Western International Band Clinic. It was a privilege for us to be invited to play, and while there, we got to see some amazing parts of Seattle.

If you could do something over again, what would it be and why?

If I could do something over again, it would be to become more involved in clubs. Although I was a member of a few clubs, I was not the most active member. I wish I could go back and create more memorable experiences for myself and try to connect more with my peers.

What advice would you give your high school self?

Don’t be so hard on yourself. People are not judging you the way you believe they are, and it’s ok to be yourself without fear of judgment.

What did you do after high school?

I am currently in my third year at the Moores School of Music at the University of Houston. I’m a music education major currently studying with Aralee Dorough. I’m also exploring jazz flute performance and performing with our Jazz Orchestra this semester. Outside of school, I am a private lesson teacher working with beginner flute players and work as box office staff for the University of Houston Katherine G. McGovern College of the Arts.

What five words describe you now?

Outgoing, determined, open-minded, social and tired.

What’s next for you?

To keep learning and preparing to student teach(!) I plan to teach elementary music after college but hope to continue playing flute, particularly jazz, and teaching private lessons on the side.
