Where are you planning to go to college after high school?

University of Pennsylvania or UT Austin

Jason, you are president of BPA. How did you manage extracurricular activities and focus on academics?

Making and following a good schedule. I’d use Google Calendar so I can keep track of all my events weeks ahead of time and plan any new events around them.

You both are Birmingham Scholars and received the highest scholarships this year. How does it feel to be recognized for all the hard work you put into your academic life?

It’s pretty cool! Beyond the money and title, receiving the Birmingham Scholarship reiterates the importance of education and seems to validate the sacrifices so many have made to help me get where I am today.

You both have stayed in the same position for four years straight. Describe the work effort you maintained to remain at the top of your class.

The biggest part is having a goal in mind. Whether it was getting an A on the next chemistry test or reading the history chapter by Friday, I set new goals and worked to achieve them. Unfortunately to do so, I sometimes sacrificed sleep, hobbies or time with friends.

How does it feel to be an inspiration to other first generation Asian-American students who get to witness your success?

It’s surreal. Growing up, I’d look up to my older cousins and sister for inspiration. I can only wish them the best of luck in their own journeys. You guys got this!

What was the hardest class you took in all four years on campus?

AP Spanish IV. Fue muy difícil pero gratificante.

If you could give advice to yourself as a freshman, what would it be?

Do NOT wait until senior year to do all the fun stuff. “Senior SZN” is not what you’d expect. Also, please get some sleep.
