Sigma Sisters sing, Sigma Sisters serve, Raider choirs sing on pass it on chants the Sigma Sisters ending their Wednesday meeting.

“We chose the Greek alphabet of ‘Sigma Iota Sigma’ to represent the name of the group ‘Sisters in Song,’” said choir director Ashley Dame, who started the organization.

Sigma is like a sorority, not because of the dumb, yet pretty stereotype, but because the group consists of only girls.

“A few girls had mentioned they wanted to do service through the choir but they weren’t officers,” Mrs. Dame said. “I wanted to provide these girls with an opportunity to serve our choir community.  We would be happy to include any men who also wanted to be a part of our club. We would not exclude any genders from the club, but we haven’t had any men come to our meetings with interest in joining.”

SIS is an organization that gives girls the opportunity to participate in community service and sing.

“There was a need to provide opportunities for service and our officer choir council was stretched to the limit. We needed additional willing volunteers to help lead. Our club provides service to the Wylie community. We also sing together,” Mrs. Dame said.

In the organization there are specific leadership roles that take on more responsibility and help lead the group. Leadership roles have not yet been elected.

“The main officer duties are that of President, Vice-President and Secretary. We have had many girls in leadership positions in the past two years and I look forward to seeing who will be our next president,” Mrs. Dame said.

Sigma only has two requirements that must be met to be in the organization.

“Attendance at meetings is the only requirement and a willing heart to serve others. Girls in choir from any grade can join. It’s an amazing club,” Mrs. Dame said.

Sigma is a place for students to establish long lasting friendships and it also gives people a positive environment to express themselves.

“The best thing in Sigma is having such a close relationship with my fellow sisters.

The club has had a movie night where we watched The Greatest Showman. It was an amazing way for all of us to bond together,” said junior Sheridan Woodrow.

Sigma always participates in Angel Tree Christmas which is where SIS  members and choir students purchase gifts for children less fortunate. They are always looking for more ways to give back.

“We will be adding to our service and doing a canned food/non perishable food item donation drive for our fall concert. I’m looking forward to this new added enhancement. Giving is everything,” Mrs. Dame said.

Sigma is taking members up until Oct. 3 in room 501. Sigma meetings are Wednesdays during B lunch in the choir room.
