Social hierarchy of high school hard to understand

writer: Liz Abrams

The Populars, the Christians, the Jocks, the Cheerleaders, the Burn outs, the Nerds and the coolest people you will ever meet. High School is separated into different groups and kinds just to make the world go round. Could you imagine a jock talking to a nerd? Scandalous! This is how “the best four years” of your life work. You’re either in, or you’re out. There is no gray in teenage world.

Why though? Why can we not all be equal and share the school, instead of shunning those who are not like us. Coming from someone who is stuck in the middle—wait, you say, I thought there wasn’t a middle? On the contrary, those who don’t fit into anything get to settle here in awkward land—I watch everyone else do their own things, I notice what happens.

Football players get away with murder during the season, and even after the season has ended they still seem to walk on water compared to others. What is the deal with them? They can throw, tackle and catch a ball. Whoop-de-doo. This does not give the right for them to walk the halls like they own them. Am I jealous of them you ask? No I am not, I do not want to be worshiped by a group of people who may not go anywhere in life.

The majority of the ‘Christians’ and other religious people hold up an image of perfection. Not calling all of them out, just a few. The religious are supposed to set an example for the rest to watch. Humans are not perfect, I know this, but when someone parties and drinks, it makes the image seem a little fake. We, yes I am one of them, are supposed to lead by example. By acting the way we do around others, it makes it harder to lead others into what we are preaching. We talk it, but do we walk it?

Gossip is one of the most common occurrences in high school. We all do it.

“Did you hear she’s pregnant?”

“I heard she got wasted this weekend.”

“Gosh she is so ugly; look at her.”

It’s always going around school, little snickers about different people, popular or not, every group has their own drama.

Most people during high school are faker than the tans girls have in the winter. The Christians party, the goody good cheats on a test, and your best friend stabs you in the back.

We lie, hurt and do whatever we can to reach the top. You can’t deny it either. High school is about status: how many likes you get, who all knows you, what you wear, where you party. All of it.

The skinnier, the better. The louder, the more popular. The meaner you are, the more popular you get.

Welcome to high school, hope you have a great four years.
