All good things come to teams when preseason ends. It’s officially baseball season. Junior varsity went 4-1-1 in their preseason time while varsity went 2-1-0. But now its crunch time, as district begins and the games get serious.

“As for JV, I feel like we can beat every other team in the district,” sophomore Chance Wiggins said. “We had a year to grow together as a team and get used to playing with each other.”

Junior varsity will get their opportunity to make an impact on the district as they play their first game March 19 against Sulphur Springs.

“We are going to have to execute and play solid baseball to win games,” junior Braden Shewmake said. “This team is full of competitors and that’s what a lot of teams lack. As for an improvement from past years, it’s hard to tell because we have played so few games. And we lost all the seniors from last year along with the fact we are so young but there definitely has be improvement from when we started as a group. It’s going to be an exciting year.”

Varsity’s kick start to the season was a 5-1 loss to McKinney North on Tuesday, March 17. According to the coaches, the team got runners on but struggled to get them in while North was making clutch plays during critical times, which was all it took for their win.

“We have a young, hardworking group who will ultimately be successful,” varsity coach Joseph Castleman said. “We just need pre games and experience at this level to gain confidence and settle in.”

Varsity will have a chance to redeem themselves during the March 19 match up against Sulpur Springs as well. Both JV and varsity will face rival Wylie High Friday, March 20. Tickets can be purchased at the gate, discounted for students with their ID.
