Pack ‘em in parking

Parking lot overcrowded by students, teacher and parents

The first year having a fully fledged high school, has its positive and negative aspects to the direction they take this upcoming year.  Parking, entering and exiting the school has become one of the downfalls of the beginning of this school year.

Parking is something simple and should not be such a headache.  The morning drop offs and afternoon pickups in the parking lot are jammed with.  This makes it very difficult just getting through the parking lot.

If you are not one of the lucky ones who paid $100 for a parking spot, then you’re out of luck.  Parking in the auditorium, gym and cafeteria parking lots has become a pain to all drivers.  Entering the school is some sort of new daily maneuver.  Student drivers are to avoid all staff, purchased parking places, parent drop off.  The parallel parking spots could also be another downfall.  Not all teenage drivers can parallel park between two cars.   In most cases, there is most likely one car per student.  The only people that don’t drive are people that ride the bus.  If the student body is approximately 1600, that is approximately 1600 kids/parents trying to leave the school at once.

Leaving the building at the end of the school day is also a big hassle.  Having only the one exit for student drivers makes it easier on bus drivers to leave the school; this is also one of the problem areas for student drivers.  Having one exit makes leaving an hourly event.  When students already have homework overload, they should not have to waste another hour getting out of the parking lot.  At the end of school the amount of cars in the parking lot can double because of parent pick up.

Riding the bus and leaving due to early release are the most efficient ways to leave the school.  Having both exits open during the end of school would increase the flow of traffic leaving.  The grass should be accessible parking at all times; it is easier for students to park and get out.  If we cannot park on the grass we should have some type of fundraising opportunities to be able to pave that area for more parking.  An administrator or traffic officer should be out directing leaving and entering traffic.

Student parking is a hassle and it is something that can easily be changed with a little bit of effort from administrators and students.
