New duo hits back roads of country

I personally rarely listen to country music, but after listening to Maddie & Tae, I’m becoming a fan. Compared to the country music I have heard on the radio like Taylor Swift and Florida Georgia Line, both of them sound rather like pop instead of country, and sing about parties or an ex-boyfriend. Maddie & Tae sound a lot better, and their songs sound like they have more meaning behind them than what you might assume.

Some of their songs like ‘Fly,’ sound rather personal and more serious, and hit you on an emotional level. While other songs like like ‘Girl in a Country Song,’ and the lyrics being, “Yeah it’s drivin’ me red, red, red, red, red, red, redneck crazy bein’ the girl in a country song. How in the world did it go so wrong?” shows that they also create things that are less serious and rather funny. Complaining about the stereotypes of country girls.

Maddie & Tae didn’t intend to get as big as they are. They just wanted to write songs about the life two 18 year olds live. “Honesty’s always the best policy,” says Tae. “We’re telling our stories and hoping people can relate.”

All of their songs have a diverse set of lyrics as well. For example ‘Sierra’ is about bullying, ‘Shut Up and Fish’ is about how clueless boys really are to how girls feel, ‘After the Storm Blows Through’ shows how strong friendship is or how strong it should be, ‘Smoke’ is about heartbreak, and ‘The Downside of Growing Up’ is about coming of age, or maturing. I honestly would have never realized that their songs had a message like that, even if I studied the lyrics closely. So the fact that each song has a different message really impresses me.

I hope the girls keep working on their music, because I think they have a lot of talent and should be more popular.
