Curfew times unknown to teenagers

Curfew in the city of Wylie causes confusion amongst teenagers and parents. From a teenage perspective we do not know when we can stay out in public with our friends without getting in trouble. Parents try to keep their children out of trouble and they can’t do that if the law is not made known to them.

The city of Wylie does not post the curfew ordinances anywhere. The only places that set any sort of curfew are at city parks. Even those signs only say that a person cannot be there between 12:01 a.m. and 6:00 a.m.

When a minor leaves a place like Founders or Community Park, does that mean that person doesn’t have a curfew? No.  There is still a city imposed curfew. The ordinance says that a person under the age of 17 cannot be out past 11 p.m. on weekdays and 12:01 a.m. on weekends. Once a person is 17 years of age, he or she no longer has a curfew.

There is a common misconception that if a person is under 18 years old they have a curfew. The reason for that misconception is that there is no easy way to find the curfew ordinance. The only way to find that information is to either go up to city hall, or dig through hundreds of online articles. There should be signs posted throughout the city that explain what the curfew is and what the fines are if the curfew is broken.

Although signs should be posted throughout the city, it is not an excuse to break the curfew and expect to be punished for it. There are still responsibilities that people have to take care of. Maintaining knowledge of the law is one of them.
