The Wylie East and Burnett Junior High choirs joined together Sept. 22 to form Coffee House, a program where choir students come together to sing and share their talents with teachers, students and parents.

The Coffee House helped raise money for Hurricane Harvey victims too. Freshman Alejah Evans was there because she likes to support the school and hear lots of different voices.

“My favorite part about Coffee House was the last performance of a girl singing ‘Pray’ because it really goes out to the victims of Hurricane Harvey,” Evans said.

The fundraiser brought in more than $600.

Choir Director Mrs. Ashley Dame started preparing for Coffee House during the middle of the summer, so they would be ready when school started. The actual prepping from the students started two months before the show.

“I decided to help out with the Coffee House, not because I had to, but because of my love for music, my husband and my students,” Mrs. Dame said.

Coffee House was held at Burnett Junior High in the cafeteria.

“The most difficult thing about Coffee House for me was the pressure to get on stage and not mess up any words or have any voice cracks,” Raylin Smith, eighth grader from Burnett Junior High, said.

Mrs. Crawford, former Burnett Junior High choir teacher, inspired Smith and Krista Whipple, freshmen, to be in Coffee House because of the hard work she put into the program and how she made everybody feel like such a family. They were also both inspired by Mrs. Dame due to her extra help and support from the side.

Students had to try out to be showcased in Coffee House in front of Choir Director Mrs. Terry Berrier and Mr. and Mrs. Dame.

This program is dedicated to Mrs. Crawford to show her legacy at Burnett and to show how far the choir program has come from her being the teacher.
