Dancing, singing and High School Musical? Both originals, covers and comedic lip-syncing could be found performed at the talent show, hosted by Student Council March 16.
This year, the theme for the night was “The Magic in W.E.” The auditorium and stage was adorned with a variety of Disney decorations, from Beauty and the Beast to Lilo and Stitch to the Little Mermaid.
“The musical this year was Cinderella, so we wanted to riff off of that,” STUCO president senior Temi George said.
The talent show consisted of 13 acts, all that related to music. Many acts included newcomers to the annual show, but there were a few returning winners from the previous year, including junior Sebastian Garcia, who won first place last year.
“Last year, I danced to junior Carissa Thatcher singing, but it’s much more intimate to dance by yourself,” Garcia said.
There were three places to win, as well as fan favorite. Audience members voted for their favorite act by placing money in their respective jar, to be donated to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Sophomores Naomi Delgado and Jasmyn Clark snagged Fan Favorite this year, raking in over $100, and also earned third place overall.
“From last year, we’ve prepared a lot more and I’ve grown as a dancer. I felt like I could show my talent off more,” Delgado said. “I heard the song first and the song itself inspired me and the way it made me feel. Once I freestyled, it stuck.”
Senior Orian Johnson won second place with his dance to “Closer” by the Chainsmokers. Sophomore Scott Roper earned first place, playing “All of Me” by John Legend on the piano.
“I was more nervous for the rehearsal than for the actual performance. Because I made a few mistakes, I didn’t expect to win but I guess I covered them well,” Roper said.
