Health Occupations Students of America competed at Frisco Centennial High School Feb. 19. Sixteen students entered with the thoughts of winning but returned making history. The Public Health team advanced to the second round but was just shy of competing for State. The Medical Reserve Corps team took fifth place in regionals. While not advancing to state MRC did however become the first team to qualify for letterman jackets in HOSA history.

“Our area is very competitive and has a lot of competitors so any time that we advance in any capacity is a win for Wylie East HOSA,” Mrs. Ronda Sisak, HOSA adviser said.

Students participate in seven different categories, Extemporaneous Writing, MRC partnership, Public Service announcement, Public Health Health career display, Extemporaneous Posters and Medical Innovations.

“My group and I entered to compete in the Public Health service announcement about the Zika Virus,” junior Sabreen Abdosh said.

The different categories focus on many hot topics within the medical field providing new ways to help solve troubling diseases and new advances within the medical field.

“HOSA stands for Health Occupations Students of America joining the club allows you enter competitions and also meet guest speakers in the Healthcare field. Being in HOSA gives you the opportunity to volunteer for your community and happens to look great when applying for colleges,” Abdosh said.
HOSA provides students who are looking in pursuing a career within the medical field a chance to meet many healthcare professionals and see the real workings within the medical field.
