Students take day to understand importance of college degrees

Mapping futures, magic carpet rides and receiving glow in the dark bracelets, the district held a day using these exercises to help students understand how essential going to college can be Jan. 20.

“I thought it really helped get the idea of what applying would be like for those individuals who are really considering going to college,” freshman Abigail Miller said.

Teachers were able to share during classes what got them to where they are today, such as strengths, interests and possible jobs they could pursue.

“Map my future was an important day because it can help students better prepare for their future,” Principal Mike Williams said.

Students are able to take this information and explore the career types that would best suit them, making sure they choose the right classes to lead them towards their goal.

In first period, students were given a task to stand on a plastic table cloth representing a magic carpet. Teams had to flip it over without “falling off.”

“My first period is yearbook and we are already close in there. Being in each other’s personal space to flip the carpet over was an easy task,” senior Camila Garcia said.

“It was a great motivator to help us stay on track with school,” sophomore Trevor Raj said. “It actually taught us about how important our future is instead of focusing on school work.”
