Peri wins Teacher of the Year

Superintendent Dr. David Vinson and Principal Mike Williams surprised chemistry teacher Vito Peri Jan. 7 by naming him Teacher of the Year.

After teaching advanced chemistry for five years, this is Peri’s first time winning Teacher of the Year. Peri was nominated as Teacher of the Year by his fellow educators.

“I think he is well liked by the staff and students,” Williams said. “He is prepared for his lessons and does not short change his students. He has high expectations, yet understands the needs and challenges that students face. He cares.”

Students also agree he deserved this title as he has helped them become better learners.

“He’s a teacher that gives us lots of practice to help us on our quizzes,” said Peri’s student, sophomore Vanessa Eng.

Peri’s nomination pushes him to fulfill the expectations of his colleagues, as well as his own.

“I’ve always felt the need to improve my teaching,” Peri said, “This doesn’t change the fact that I always try to be better each year.”

Peri will now have to compete against other educators who have also won “Teacher of the Year” at their secondary schools, then regionals and if he succeeds, nationals.
