Six classrooms are displaced because the sprinklers went off in the kiln room in Mrs. Jennifer Thompson’s art class May 26.

The doors to the kiln room were closed causing the heat in the room to build up, triggering the sprinklers to go off and flood the entire 400 hallway.

“The kiln room got too hot around eighth period, and since we keep the doors to the kilns shut, the sprinklers went off while no one was at school,” art teacher Mrs. Angela Gilpin said.

The sprinklers to the room stayed on and that caused the water to spread throughout the hallway to Mrs. Stephanie Shepard’s, Dr. Jacob Day’s, Mrs. Andrea Henderson’s, Mr. James Hood’s, Mrs. Gilpin’s and Mrs. Thompson’s classes.

“The water spread to the other classrooms and none of the important artwork was damaged in my classroom because the water was only on the floor. The only thing that was damaged were some printer papers in our storage closet,” Thompson said.

To air out the rooms that were flooded, janitors had to move everything off of the floor and brought in fans to dry up the water. They also had to take out the molding from the bottom of the walls and drill holes on the bottom of the floor to help air out the walls to avoid extreme water damage.

Mrs. Shepard, Dr. Day, Mrs. Henderson and Mr. Hood’s classrooms are supposed to be moved back to their normal class rooms by May 29. Mrs. Gilpin and Mrs. Thompson are expected to move back into their classes the week of June 1.
