Students will NOT be released early

Students+will+NOT+be+released+early+

story updated at 1:10 p.m.

This just in: According to WISD’s Facebook page, juniors and seniors at both high schools who drive may leave early. Seniors may leave 40 minutes early and juniors may leave 15 minutes early. If underclassmen normally ride with an upperclassman, they will be allowed to leave with them. We are reminding them to drive slowly and safely.

Despite rumors about an early dismissal, WISD schools are NOT closing early due to snow and ice, unlike neighboring districts.

Garland, Plano and Farmersville ISD have already begun releasing students.

Community ISD will release all students at 2:00.

Even though no snow was in sight when elementary schools started at 7:20 a.m., the roads had a thin layer of snow on them by the 9 a.m. start time for high schools.

“It was fine when my niece went to school this morning,” senior Keana Mack said.

Mack and her brother were late to school after slipping in the school parking lot and hitting a curb with their car.

“Due to snow and icy conditions, all afternoon and evening events involving Wylie ISD are cancelled, this includes all athletic events and any campus events,” Ian Halperin, WISD Executive Director of Community Relations said.

Possible school cancellations is not the only concern for students. Junior Madison Jennings is scheduled to work in Murphy today.

“Even if they cancel school, they are not going to cancel Wendy’s,” Jennings said.

School delays and cancellations for Feb. 6 are not yet determined.

“We will continue to evaluate the roads throughout the evening and into tomorrow before we make any decisions on Friday’s school day,” Halperin said.

Watch the district website, www.wylieisd.net,  and Facebook page for official closings and cancellations.

“Wylie ISD officials have spent the last few hours driving the roads, consulting with the city’s police and public works departments, and reviewing weather forecasts as we consider the remainder of the school day,” Halperin said. ” Many of our students would be going home to an empty house.”
