Don’t fall victim to telemarketer calling students

Wylie ISD is aware that a telemarketing company is contacting students with a “special thank-you present for parents.” This company, Modern Recognition, is in no way affiliated with the district. Please know that Wylie ISD does everything possible under the law to protect students and their families’ information.

“They called my mom trying to reach me to buy some special gift for her,” said Senior Mikayla Morales.

The district has made a policy change to help safeguard student information.  In Wylie ISD, a student’s home phone number and address will no longer be released under this type of request. You do not need to take any action for this to take effect.

The Wylie Police Department is aware of this situation but is limited because no crime has been committed.  The best thing you can do is NOT BUY their products.  And spread the word among your friends.  These companies will move on if no one buys from them.

“Parents, please discuss this issue with your child and make him or her aware that this is going on,” Community Relations Director Ian Halperin said. “For anyone feeling victimized, please contact the Texas Attorney General, https://www.oag.state.tx.us/consumer/complaints.shtml.”

“If you have any questions about our privacy policy please feel free to contact the Communications and Community Relations Office at 972-429-3012,” Halperin said. “Keeping our students (and their private information) safe is a priority.”

This telemarketing company has a long, ugly history of this across the state.
