Raiders ‘Pink Out’ to show support for young cancer patient

Sophie May is the daughter of Tibbals Elementary staff member, Whitney Sewell.

On June 20 Sophie was diagnosed with neuroblastoma – a cancerous tumor in her abdomen. She is currently healing from surgery and prepping for stem cell transplants and radiation.

Raider Nation would like to show our support for Sophie’s Second Birthday and Fight Against Cancer by PINKING OUT Wylie East Friday, Oct. 19. Students and staff are encouraged to show support by wearing pink attire to school on Friday and giving a monetary donation to Sophie’s family. Donation jars will be set up before school and during all lunches on Friday, and will be sent to the Sewell Family to help with Sophie’s medical expenses.

Aside from regular dress code, jeans will be permitted with a pink shirt. Aside from jeans, all non-dress code items must be pink.

“If a student wears leggings, they must be pink and be worn under shorts or pants of appropriate fit and length,” STUCO advisor Angela Arp said. “Leggings must be no shorter than three inches above the knee and not tight-fitting.”

If a student wears a tutu, it must be worn over shorts or pants of appropriate fit and length, again no shorter than three inches above the knee.

Students may NOT wear workout shorts, running shorts, flip flops, tanks or sleeveless shirts.

“Personalized or homemade pink shirts for ‘Team Sophie’ are allowed,” Arp said.

In addition to dressing for the school day, Student Council would like to invite all of Raider Nation (WEHS and feeder schools) to show support for Sophie and her family by wearing pink to the football game Oct. 19. Donation containers will be set up at the game to collect donations for the Sewell family.

“Let’s show Sophie and her family the love and compassion Raider Nation has for them! Stop and THINK about Sophie, wear PINK to school and the game this FRIDAY,” Friends of Rachel sponsor Megan Maxwell said.
