Summer Reading and Assignments

Book: AP U.S. History Crash Course (REA) by Larry Krieger

ISBN: 0738608130

Welcome to AP US History: This will be a very busy year and our goal is to be prepared for the AP US History exam which takes place in May 2012! This class is a college-level course and will cover 500 years of American History. While you might find aspects of it challenging, you will come out of the course better prepared for college. One of the goals of the class is to help students achieve credit on the AP Exam. The AP Exam is an excellent opportunity to gain experience in taking a college-level exam and if you commit to putting in the effort, it is very likely that you will do well on the exam. Since this is a college-level course that requires extensive background knowledge in all aspects of US History, it is imperative that we get off the ground running in August.

The district approved textbook, Kennedy’s American Pageant, is a college level textbook. Once the school year begins and textbooks are issued, you will be expected to read the first eleven chapters in six weeks. Students will find it beneficial to acquire an AP review source, such as Krieger’s AP US History Crash Course to provide a supplemental overview to the reading assignments. With your own copy you will be able to annotate and highlight as needed. You will also have practice multiple-choice questions in the AP-style, particularly five choices, which is also the style you will have on unit tests.

Your success in the class will depend on your willingness to do assigned readings, assignments, and actually STUDY for exams. By completing the summer reading assignment, you will begin the semester with a definite advantage.
