JROTC is coming to town \\ Checking out at the Wylie Walmart Colonel Brooks McFarland shows JROTC the true meaning of Christmas. Every year, members of JROTC cadets go class-to-class collecting money from their peers and teachers to purchase gifts for the Wylie Way Christmas Angels. “We were able to raise more money this year, which was really cool because we could give even more presents out,” C/1Lt TJ Garvin said.

Walk in silence \\ Participating in the “Silent Truth” day, juniors Ashleigh Bycott, Ryah Hill and Redieat Samson take a day of silence in honor of Red Ribbon Week and the effects of drugs on teenagers. Student Council hosted the event, inviting organizations all around the school to participate by asking several of their members to go silent. “It was such a difficult thing to do, especially coming from a chatty person, but it made it much more significant to understand the true effects drugs can have on anyone.”

First time to the field \\ Kicking off the marching season, junior Kaitlyn Larson performs to the band’s arranged piece of multiple songs from the Broadway musical Hamilton. The Gold Out game against Longview got cancelled so in place of football’s Friday Night Lights, the Pride of the East, cheerleaders, and Sapphires got to perform their halftime show Oct. 16. “It felt exhilarating to perform in front of a crowd after practicing for so long,” Larson said.

Crowning moment \\ Senior Jada Hahs is crowned as the senior homecoming princess Oct. 7 at the coronation ceremony following the homecoming parade. Senior Clayton Ensley was crowned senior prince. Due to an outbreak of positive COVID-19 cases among the football players, the homecoming football game was cancelled for the first time ever.
